Hadestown at Wang Theatre

Have you ever wanted to escape the hardships of life? Well, in Hadestown, a young girl named Eurydice did precisely that. She abandons life on Earth due to famine and poverty. Instead, she chose a life in Hadestown, a Greek underworld that resembles a hellish industrial world. But Eurydice’s departure from Earth doesn’t go unnoticed because her lover, Orpheus, extensively searches to save her from hell. The poor singer-songwriter promised to write a song to make spring come again. Sadly, this wasn’t enough to persuade Eurydice to stay. Some other iconic characters in Hadestown include Hades himself, Persephone, the Fates, and Hermes.

The original production was held in 2006 in Barre, Washington, and Vergennes, Vermont. The ten-city tour was more like a D.I.Y theater project with the music, lyrics, and book written and composed by Anais Mitchell. The initial creative team included arranger Michale Chorney. A few years later, Mitchell sought the help of acclaimed director Rachel Chavkin. Together, they transformed the small production into a stage musical with 15 more songs and developed a more clarified plot and dialogue. In 2016, Hadestown premiered on Off-Broadway. Its initial spring/summer run was extended by a few more weeks. After making waves in New York, the production traveled to Canada in 2017 and London in 2018. The following year, Hadestown finally went on Broadway, and the production continues to belt out performances to this day.

Its Broadway run resulted in numerous accolades, including eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Meanwhile, Chavkin won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical. Over at the Drama Desk Awards, Hadestown won Outstanding Lighting Design for a Musical and Outstanding Sound Design in a Musical. In 2019, the musical bagged six Outer Critics Circle Awards out of 12 nominations, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical. The following year, Hadestown’s official music soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Best Music Theater Album.

The team had also brought in tour coordinator Eric Kang to lead the touring production for North America.

“Directed by Rachel Chavkin (“Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812”), “Hadestown” contains a stunning visual design evoking both a New Orleans barroom scene and a smoldering mechanical underworld, complemented by the motion of turntables, a rollicking band, bold performances and expressive dance choreography.” – Matt Windman of amNY

Hadestown is set to extend its performances all the way to the spring of 2024. The musical has received countless rave reviews since its premiere in Off-Broadway. Critics praised its Broadway production, particularly the actors for Hades and Queen Persephone. NJ.com’s reviewer describes the performers as “excellent, with one standing slightly above the rest.” The writer continued to call the performances as “both garishly funny and romantically yearning.” Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly praised the musical for using Greek mythology and creating something new. The review continued to say it “feels like it sprung forth as something entirely new.” Lastly, the Daily Beast had nothing but good words for the musical, “Hadestown has so much fun telling, as it puts it, this “sad tale” that even though this retelling of a well-trodden Greek myth feels slight, it also makes for a joyful performance.”
