KOY’S RISE IN COMEDY

Joseph Glenn Herbert, or professionally known as JO KOY, was born to an American father and a Filipina mother, growing up in Washington. Dropping out of university to pursue stand-up comedy, it all paid off as the world soon discovered his knack for causing extreme laughs. All thanks to his relatable tales and iconic impersonations of his mom, Herbert found global recognition, critical acclaim, and a special love from his fans—especially Filipino-Americans and an army of followers back home. 

With six stand-up specials across platforms, including Comedy Central and Netflix, he’s raked up millions of views and rave reviews from critics & stand-up comedy fans. Some of his most notable ones include “Lights Out,” “In His Elements,” “Comin' in Hot,” and “Live from Seattle.” One thing’s for sure — people can’t get enough of his wild nights on the road. It’s one thing to crack up in front of your screens, but the live Jo Koy experience? Nothing compares.

Performing stand-up comedy for over three decades now, Jo Koy has mastered the art of a sharp wit, relatability, and honest comedy that hits right home, inspires, and uplifts. 

“I wanted to make sure I give an identity to up-and-coming kids that are mixed race or Filipino just to have something that inspired them,” he told TODAY. “When I'm doing an impersonation of my mom or a joke about nursing, it gives us an identity that makes us proud, and that's what that was all about.”

All dedicated to his mom, it’s this very woman whom he impersonates that encouraged him to perform since he was young. From family gatherings to school shows, he became a seasoned entertainer all thanks to his mom. Jo Koy credits her as the reason why he’s performing for millions of people—hoping to share his Filipino roots, and spread as much joy and positivity as he can.
