Gregory Alan Isakov is a South African-born American singer & songwriter based in Colorado. Born in Johannseburg and raised in Philadelphia, the man developed a heart for music as he grew up. Performing and playing a few shows with a band at age 16, he took playing music to heart and played occasional gigs as while in university. As he began touring with Kelly Joe Phelps, he took his career even more seriously, and self-released his first album "Rust Colored Stones" by 2003.
Over the years, he's solidified his reputation as one of the finest names in folk music across his albums, including the Grammy-nominated "Evening Machines", fan and critic-favorite "This Empty Northern Hemisphere", the heartfelt "The Weatherman", and his Billboard 200-charting record "Appaloosa Bones".
Influenced by the likes on Gillian Welch, Iron & Wine, Kelly Joe Phelps, Leonard Cohen, and Bruce Springsteen, his music explores themes that dive deep into nature, personal experiences, and introspective thoughts within the bounds of folk & indie genres.
"Somewhere along the way a seed gets planted, and then I just try to get out of the way and let the song come to life - to let the idea run it’s course," Isakov shared with Austin Sailsbury. "The whole process is pretty organic, and you certainly can’t force it."
Every single song he creates stems from the heart, staying true to what he feels. "I’ve always kind of seen albums as songwriters’ gifts to the world," he added, sharing that he likes creating a record that tells a better story through an album that's cohesive with "a beginning, a middle, and an end."
About his most recent work on "Appaloosa Bones", critics have recognized that Isakov manages to level up what he does best. With familiar and striking inspirations on his sixth LP, "The indie-folk singer’s unpretentious storytelling, his grippingly simple finger-picking, the mystic, itinerant feel of it all," as described by Paste Magazine, it sure is an album that speaks for itself. All in all, the writer sums it up as a record that's "reliably beautiful and starkly self-possessed throughout, simultaneously free of forced erudition and mass-produced pandering."
Witness Appaloosa Bones and his legendary roster of folk hits come to life in An Intimate Evening with Gregory Alan Isakov coming to the Wang Theatre. Don't miss out by booking your tickets now!
