The dance company had humble beginnings but it was a groundbreaking event that broke barriers and defied the odds. In 1958, dancer/choreographer Alvin Ailey along with his group of talented black modern dancers took to 92 street Y in Manhattan, New York to perform a stunning masterpiece. That was the beginning of what would be the most influential dance company in New York. Beginning with a seven-dance ensemble, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater now has 34 dancers under its helm. The company continues to perform Ailey’s outstanding masterpieces through the Ailey Classics. Revelations is also a popular piece that is still performed to this day. Other Ailey pieces include, A Song For You, Cry, Memoria, and Streams, among others.
