The Singer, The Songwriter, The Musician

Yusuf Islam, most commonly known as Yusuf / Cat Stevens, is a British singer, songwriter, musician and activist from London, England. Stevens’ musical career began when he decided to become a songwriter while playing at local cafes in 1965. The same year, Stevens signed a publishing deal with Ardmore & Beechwood and recorded several demos. Stevens’ first major break came through after releasing his first set of singles, "I Love My Dog" and "Matthew and Son". "Matthew and Son" reached number 2 in the UK charts. His debuting album, Matthew and Son, was released in 1967 and reached number 7 on UK’s album chart. Following the success of the album, Stevens toured with artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Engelbert Humperdinck.

Stevens contracted tuberculosis in 1969, which left him hospitalized for a long time. During the illness and his home recovery, Stevens decided to take a different direction with his music. Stevens decided to make music that’s more personal rather than polished mainstream songs he had done previously. It was during this period that Stevens start exploring folk rock music genre. In 1970, Stevens released his second studio album, Mona Bone Jakon, and it’s considered to be the style defying album for Stevens. Popular hit single from this album is "Lady D'Arbanville", which reached number 8 in UK charts. However, it was his next album, Tea for the Tillerman, which became Stevens’ breakthrough album, with top 20 hit single “Wild World”, and popular hits "Hard-Headed Woman", and "Father and Son". In 2001, the album was certified a Multi-Platinum album by RIAA. The success grew further with the release of 1971’s gold record album, Teaser and the Firecat, and hit singles "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken", and "Moonshadow". The album became another Multi-Platinum record by RIAA.

In 1976, Stevens faced death when he almost drowned off the coast of Malibu, California. Stevens said he shouted "Oh, God! If you save me I will work for you." According to the musician, a great wave washed him back to the shores immediately and after which he converted to Islam, and changed name to Yusuf Islam, in 1978. He devoted many years writing Islamic music and humanitarian activities. In 2003 Yusuf recorded his popular tracks "Peace Train" and "Wild World" as part of a new compilation CD, which also included performances from David Bowie and Paul McCartney.
